About Safe Sleep

To reduce and prevent unintentional infant injury and deaths in West Virginia related to unsafe infant sleep environments, WV AAP is collaborating with Our Babies: Safe & Sound to expand a hospital-based initiative “Say Yes to Safe Sleep!” to Pediatric Providers statewide.

Say YES to safe sleep! Learn more about the latest American Academy of Pediatrics’s recommendations for safe sleep and how you can make these resources available in your home or clinic.

Safe Sleep Checklist

  • Baby always sleeps alone on his or her back in a crib or bassinet nearby.
  • Baby always sleeps in a smoke and vape-free space.
  • Dress your baby in light sleep clothing and keep the room at comfortable temperature.
  • Crib is clear of toys, heavy or loose blankets, bumper pads & pillows
  • Baby’s mattress is firm and fits close to the sides.
  • The crib is in good shape and meets Consumer Product Safety guidelines.
  • It’s safest for baby to sleep in the room where you sleep, but not in your bed.
